“We wish we’d found this lifestyle ten years ago,” reveal Phil and Margaret James.

The couple settled into Helena Valley Lifestyle Village at the start of 2025, having moved to Perth in 2022.

“We came to the Village in December last year and fell in love with it, so we sold our house in Wattle Grove and moved into a two-bedroom Lemon Gum home,” explains 73-year-old Phil.

We would’ve come straight here when we arrived from Sydney, if we’d known about it.

“It has all the benefits of suburbia, but it feels like we’re in a semi-rural area as it’s so peaceful and tranquil and at night you hear the rustling of the leaves.”

Margaret, 67, and Phil also adore the bushland next door.

“We’ve got a small dog and we walk every day in the bush reserve adjacent to the Village,” shares Phil.

“There’s a walking path and kangaroos and lots of birdlife, so it’s great for people who have pets or just want to cycle or walk around.”

The couple also embraces the amenities and activities right on their doorstep.

“We’re just amazed at the Clubhouse and the indoor heated pool and spa and sauna; you only get those in 4- and 5-star resorts and they’re readily available here,” Phil says.

Then there are the social activities, bush croquet, Village dinners, morning teas and bingo nights.

“There’s so much to do, and we have more ‘we time’ because our home has everything we want but is so easy to maintain.”

Downsizing also came with the benefit of enhanced safety.

“To be in a gated community is important; you could even leave your door unlocked if you wish and feel comfortable because it’s very secure,” Phil states.

Then there’s the new lease on life that comes from an expanding social circle.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have made a host of friends in a small space of time and that’s been a big bonus,” adds Phil.
